Lumin
Grab your tote: DTC men’s skincare brand Lumin is now at Target stores across the US, following a nationwide expansion into Walmart last month.
- Its products in Target, including face wash, dark circle defense, UV cream, and an anti-wrinkle serum, range from $11.99–$14.99.
Fresh start: Lumin, founded in 2018, started as DTC only, but customer demand to buy products in stores ramped up as the company grew, said Darwish Gani, co-founder of Lumin and its parent company Pangaea. Additionally, it discovered a growing market for men’s skincare products, he noted.
- Sales grew 50% YoY in 2020 and 2021, according to the company, though Gani did not share specific numbers.
“Talking to the teams at these companies and their visions for the future of what the men’s sections of their stores look like, we felt Lumin could be a part of that story,” Gani told Retail Brew. “We felt there’s a kind of unique opportunity for both parties to benefit and try something new on each side.”
Being able to bypass department stores and go right into big-box retailers—where the reach is much wider—is another benefit, noted Kevin O’Connell, Lumin’s general manager.
- “We really wanted to bring that level of quality to the mass consumer where [men are] already shopping,” he told us. “That's a place we saw a big space for us.”
Looking ahead…For now, Lumin is focused on making sure the Walmart and Target partnerships go smoothly, but Gani said the company will continue to assess if it should double down on stores or e-comm.
“We’ll constantly evaluate and ask ourselves, ‘Are we selling our products in the right channels for the right set of folks?’” Gani said. “We are open to exploring new kinds of partnerships, but that hasn’t been the priority at the moment.”—KM

February is a short month, but it was full of retail execs on the move. Retail Brew has a quick recap:
-
Dufry Group, one the largest airport retailers in the world, chose Xavier Rossinyol to be CEO, when Julián Diaz steps down later this year.
-
Save A Lot picked Leon Bergmann, who most recently led wholesaler Harvest Sherwood Food Distributors, as the new head of the St. Louis-based discount grocer—which is itself shifting to a wholesale biz model.
-
Peloton’s John Foley, who co-founded the company, was replaced as CEO as the frenzy for its fitness products started to fizzle. Barry McCarthy, the former CFO at Spotify and Netflix, is now at the helm (while Foley is the executive chair).
-
Shipt found its new chief exec, Kamau Witherspoon, at parent company Target, where he was SVP of ops.
-
In a surprise move (on a Friday, of course), L’Oréal named a new CEO—David Greenberg—for its US biz.
-
Also in beauty, Estée Lauder “forced out” exec John Demsey over an Instagram post that contained a racial slur and a Covid-19 joke.
+1: And Dave Clark, who helps oversee retail at Amazon, was quite literally on the move: Insider reported in early February that he left the Seattle area for Texas last fall. He’s still with the e-comm giant.—GT

As Russia’s invasion of Ukraine presses on, so do calls to respond to the crisis.
We shared Kyiv-based designer Ruslan Baginskiy’s email to Vogue Business yesterday. Dima Ieveko—founder of Ukrainian outerwear brand Ienki Ienki, which was at Milan Fashion Week—also spoke to GQ about finding a safe place for his employees in Ukraine while he was in Italy.
-
“I’m with every person constantly on the phone, asking, ‘Where are you, what’s happening?’” he told the publication.
As for if fashion should proceed as normal, Ieveko was direct: “Definitely not.” (Imran Amed, founder of The Business of Fashion, penned a piece on calls for the industry to step up.) And WWD spoke to Ukrainian creatives about their search for security in the country amid the war.
Shuttered: Some companies have temporarily closed their stores in Ukraine, including H&M and Mango. LPP and CCC, two of Poland’s biggest retailers, suspended all operations in the country.
-
Brands and businesses are also trying to provide relief in the meantime through donations.
The US and EU imposed sanctions on Russia—and while luxury goods haven’t been included so far, it might only be a matter of time.
Some liquor stores in the US and Canada are taking Russian vodka off their shelves to protest the invasion.
And Steve Lamar, CEO at the American Apparel and Footwear Association, told Just Style it was “working closely with our members to track the evolving situation, including the effects this will have on supply chains, other global economic factors, and the imposition of sanctions.” The WSJ, too, looks at what the conflict means for businesses.—JS

Target had a blockbuster Q4, and it expects to build on its momentum even more.
-
Kohl’s, which also reported earnings, has high hopes for revenues in 2022.
-
DoorDash snapped up Bbot, an ordering platform for restaurants.
-
The union organizing Starbucks workers is accusing the company of workers’ rights violations in a series of complaints filed with the NLRB; the coffee giant says that “any claims of anti-union activity are categorically false.”

What happened in the world of retail this week in…2002 and beyond? Retail Brew takes you way, way, way back.
It’s a week that made some waves:
-
On February 27, 2007, Federated Department Stores announced plans to change its corporate name—which it had used since 1929—to Macy’s Group, Inc.
-
Also on February 27, but years later in 2014, Versace sold a 20% stake to Blackstone, the PE firm, for 210 million euros, or $287 million. (Michael Kors bought the luxury fashion house, in full, in 2018 for $2.1 billion.
-
On March 1, 2002, Nike announced it had purchased surfwear manufacturer Hurley International.
-
And on March 4, 2015, Etsy filed for an IPO.
