This Week in Retail: Apple fall event and August consumer price index

Plus, Beanstalk brings DTC brands to Brooklyn.

Apple is hosting its much-anticipated annual fall event on Tuesday at its headquarters in Cupertino, California. The event is where the company unveils its latest iPhones and devices, as well as new features such as an artificial intelligence-powered web search tool to compete with OpenAI.

Here’s what else is going on in retail:

In data releases: The consumer price index for August is coming out this Thursday. The July reading showed prices increasing 0.2% month over month and 2.7% year over year. The rate was less than economists expected, as many were expecting inflation to accelerate with the onset of new tariff restrictions. Inflation fears remain, though, with some economists forecasting a sizable spike in the near future.

In expos: Beanstalk, previously known as Commerce Summit, is coming to Brooklyn this week. The event brings together DTC and digitally native brands that generate annual revenues in the range of “double-digit million dollars to single digit billions,” according to the event’s website, with a focus on founders and senior executives who will meet in small groups or “Tabletalks” to discuss topics relevant to the industry.

In webinars: IHL Group is hosting a webinar on Tuesday to discuss its 2025 Retail Inventory Distortion report. The research looks at how retailers’ margins are being eroded by stockouts, overstocks, and wasted markdowns, which together cost the industry more than $1.3 trillion. IHL analysts Matt Hopkins, Greg Buzek, and Lee Holman will be in attendance.
