Walmart’s unlimited grocery delivery service passed its testing phase with flying colors.

The receipts: With Walmart’s Delivery Unlimited, customers at 1,400 stores can pay $98 annually or $12.95 per month for grocery deliveries. By the end of 2019, the program will be available at 1,600 locations spanning more than half of the U.S.

Imagine the crowds at Costco’s Shanghai opening...but 24/7. That’s what the online grocery delivery market looks like with the addition of Walmart’s program.

  • Amazon entered online grocery in 2014 with Prime Now, which costs $119 per year for all deliveries, including groceries. Over 100 million Prime members are eligible for Prime Now.
  • Target paid $550 million for Shipt in 2017 to speed up its grocery delivery operations.
  • Instacart independently delivers groceries for over 20,000 stores in the U.S and Canada. But Walmart already has 62% more online grocery customers than Instacart as of last month.

Bottom line: With or without Delivery Unlimited, Walmart is still the world’s largest grocery retailer. The extra service will seek to ensure Walmart's booming e-commerce arm keeps growing.
