Facebook Marketplace turned 10 recently, and Meta is finally giving sellers tools to manage and grow their businesses.

The new app, called Seller, is built specifically for people who sell via the Facebook Marketplace. It brings tools sellers need into one place: AI-powered listing creation tool, inventory management, a unified inbox, and performance insights.

Facebook Marketplace launched in 2016 as a place for people to sell things they already own. With the Seller app, Meta is giving sellers proper e-commerce tools, a signal that the Marketplace is becoming a priority for the company.

What started as casual buying and selling in Facebook Groups has grown into an online flea market with 430 million listings posted globally every month, Meta said. For a lot of sellers, Marketplace has turned into “a side hustle, a small business, real income,” the company said in a blog post.

Brands can still sell directly through Facebook, but the Seller app is meant for a more serious selling operation, providing a dedicated space to manage it, the company said.

Zoom in: The Seller app can sync to Facebook Marketplace and pull in information from merchants’ existing listings, messages, and selling history, the company said. Anything a merchant or seller creates in the app automatically shows up on the Marketplace.

Facebook has recently connected its secondhand catalog listings to AI discovery with Meta AI, Juozas Kaziukėnas, an e-commerce expert, wrote in a LinkedIn post. When Kaziukėnas asked Meta AI for a used gravel bike, it pulled up options from Facebook Marketplace.

“Facebook Marketplace is a hidden gem inside the cesspool that is Facebook,” Kaziukėnas wrote. “But it is still a mess of endless listings so having automation discover the best options is genuinely useful.”

Seller’s AI-powered listing tool is synced with Meta AI, which Meta introduced in 2024 to answer queries across its family of apps, including Instagram and WhatsApp. When sellers upload a photo, Meta AI fills in the title, description, suggested price, and category. There’s also a bulk listing feature for brands looking to move a lot of inventory at once.

Seller also comes with a feature called unified inbox where all messages from customers are organized by listing so the merchant doesn’t need to hunt through conversations. In addition, a performance dashboard shows views, clicks, message threads, and sales data to merchants.
