This Week in Retail: New York Fashion Week and August retail sales
Plus, Nike launches its new NBA fashion collection.

We’re right in the middle of New York Fashion Week, and outside of the halls of high fashion, there are still a few retail-related events, soirees, and openings. Walmart is running a Fashion Pop-Up in downtown Manhattan through September 20. SAP is hosting an event today looking at the future of the fashion customer experience. And Rockefeller Center is still open to the public for live broadcasts of runway shows.
Here’s what else is going on in retail this week:
In data releases: The US Census Bureau is releasing its monthly retail sales numbers for August on Wednesday. The report for July showed sales declining 0.6% month over month—the first drop for the measure in nine months.
In gatherings: Beanstalk, an invite-only event for founders, CEOs, and the C-suite of brands making more than $10 million in revenue, is coming to Industry City in Brooklyn this week. Rather than focusing keynotes and panels on a main state, the event aims to provide a mix of executive meetings, power lunches, boardroom sessions, and private dinners. Major companies in attendance include Shopify, Unilever, Procter & Gamble, Dyson, Away, and Bombas.
Similarly focused on peer-to-peer exchanges, Total Retail Tech is coming to Dallas, Texas, this week. The event brings together select retail executives in small-group settings and one-to-one meetings for “honest and open discussions about technology and other business challenges,” per the website.
In product releases: The first retail drop for Nike’s new NBA Standard Issue Collection hits stores and online retailers on Tuesday. The collection is aimed at both fans and players, and draws “inspiration from all aspects of the modern hooper’s world, from the court and stage to movies, gaming, style and fashion,” per Nike.
