More than half of Canadians avoid buying American products
Consumers in France, China, Malaysia, and other countries also spending less on US brands

After a year and a half of “51st state” taunts from President Trump, escalating tariffs, and most recently, outright import bans, it will come as no surprise that many Canadians are snubbing American products.
More than half (51%) of Canadians avoid buying US-made products when possible, according to a new report from Abacus Data based on a September survey. That’s up from 38% who’d avoided American products when Abacus asked in February 2025 amid Trump’s initial tariff threats against Canada.
Seven in 10 Canadians want grocery stores to remove American products from shelves. Even more want them to stock more Canadian and other non-US alternatives (87%) and to clearly label products that are made in Canada (89%).
Shoppers in 13 countries across Europe and Asia are spending less on American products, too, according to a new survey by Bloomberg and Morning Consult. (Access to the full dataset requires registration.)
Topping the countries where consumers said they’ve reduced their spending on American brands compared to five years ago was Malaysia, where 55% of consumers were doing so, followed by France (47%), China (46%), South Korea (43%), and Singapore (42%).
Among consumers who said they were spending less on US brands, fast food and coffee may be hit the hardest, with 60% of consumers in the UK, China, and Indonesia saying they were spending less in those sectors, and Germany (59%) and France (57%) close behind.
As for what could encourage consumers in those countries who’d been spending less on US brands to reverse course, a change in the US’s leadership or political direction would have the most effect in Germany, where 56% said that would encourage them, followed by the UK, where 47% said so. France, Japan, and Indonesia followed, each at 30%.
